Helicopter Flight Instructor (Class 4, 3, 2, and 1)
As an experienced pilot with several thousand hours or simply a new pilot with the minimum requirements (250 hours PIC), the Flight Instructor Rating may be for you. As a flight instructor, you will use your talent to pass on your knowledge and help individuals achieve their goal of becoming a helicopter pilot. This can be a challenging but rewarding position requiring you to be proficient in passing on your skills to meet the student’s learning ability. As an instructor, you will also hone your own skills to the highest level which has its own significant benefits.

Prerequisites:

  • A Valid Commercial Pilot Licence – Helicopter
  • Minimum of 250 hours of pilot-in-command flight time in helicopters
  • Minimum of 15 hours instrument time of which a maximum of 10 hours may have been completed in approved instrument ground trainers.

Knowledge:

Minimum of 25 hours of Instructor Rating ground school instruction which shall include:

  • Practical application of the basic principles of learning and techniques of instruction
  • Preparation and use of lesson plans
  • Procedures for planning and presenting preparatory ground instruction, pre-flight briefings, in-flight instruction, and post-flight debriefings
  • Theory of flight required to teach the air exercises
  • Aircraft flight manuals and aircraft operating limits
  • Presentation of pilot decision-making concepts
  • The use of the Transport Canada Helicopter Flight Instructor Guide, Flight Training Manual, Personnel Licensing Handbooks, and the Flight Test Guide, Private and Commercial Pilot Licences – Helicopter Category.

An applicant shall obtain a minimum of 70% in each of the following written examinations:

  • Flight Instructor Rating – Helicopter – Class 4 (HIRAF)
  • Flight Instructor Rating – Helicopter – Instrument Instruction (FIREN)

Experience:

A minimum of 30 hours of dual flight instruction on overall pilot proficiency and the presentation of all exercises outlined in the Flight Instructor Guide shall include a minimum of 5 hours of training in the teaching of instrument flight skills. A maximum of 5 of the 30 hours may be conducted on an approved helicopter simulator or flight training device.

Skill:

An applicant must complete a flight test to the standard outlined in the Flight Test Standard Flight Instructor Rating – Aeroplanes, Helicopters, Aerobatics (TP5537E).
Credits

Knowledge:

An applicant who holds, or has held within the preceding 24 months, an Instructor Rating for aeroplanes, gyroplanes, gliders, balloons, or aerobatics is credited with 10 hours of the 25 hours ground school instruction requirement. An applicant who holds an Airline Transport Pilot Licence – Helicopter, or a teaching certificate issued by provincial or territorial authorities is credited with 10 hours of the 25 hours’ ground school instruction requirement. An applicant who holds or has held within the preceding 24 months, a Flight Instructor Rating – Aeroplane have met the written examination requirement.

Experience:

An applicant who holds or has held a Flight Instructor Rating – Aeroplane, is credited with 10 hours of the 30 hours’ of dual flight instruction requirement, and with the 5 hours of training in the teaching of instrument flight skills. An applicant who holds an Airline Transport Pilot Licence – Helicopter, is credited with 10 hours of the 30 hours dual flight instruction requirement.
Credits for DND Applicants:

Knowledge:

An applicant who holds, or has held within the preceding 24 months, Canadian Forces Instructor Category, Aeroplanes for initial flight training has met 10 hours of the 25 hours ground school instruction requirement. An applicant who holds, or has held within the preceding 24 months a Canadian Forces Instructor Category, Helicopters for initial flight training has met 15 hours of the 25 hours ground school instruction requirement.

Experience:

An applicant who holds, or has held within the preceding 24 months, a Canadian Forces Instructor Category, Helicopters for initial flight training is credited with a maximum of 15 hours of equivalent experience towards the 30 hours of dual flight instruction.
Credits for Foreign Applicants:

Knowledge:

An applicant who holds, or has held within the preceding 24 months, a Flight Instructor Rating – Aeroplane issued by a Contracting State has met 10 hours of the 25 hours ground school instruction requirement. An applicant who holds, or has held within the preceding 24 months a Flight Instructor Rating – Helicopter issued by a Contracting State has met 15 hours of the 25 hours ground school instruction requirement.

Experience:

An applicant who holds, or has held within the preceding 24 months, a Flight Instructor Rating – Helicopter issued by a Contracting State is credited with a maximum of 15 hours of equivalent experience towards the 30 hours of dual flight instruction.
